Chapter 23
âLook ⦠I was reluctant to believe that vampires were a real thing for a long time,â I said, patiently to lay out the explanation for Genesee. She was watching me, hands twitching now that they were free of the ropes, like she didnât know what to do with them. âThe only reason I finally came around to the idea was because one of them was chasing me, and I met Mill and Iona here,â I said, gesturing to Ionaâs sprawled form on the couch.
She wiggled her fingers at us, still sucking away at the blood bag. My stomach twisted at that, and I did everything I could to pretend like it was one of those organic fruit squeeze things for kids.
âThink of all the stories about vampires youâve heard,â I said to Gen. âMost of them are trueâsuper fast, super strong. Die with a stake through the heart. Need to be invited inside before they enter a home.â
Genâs eyes narrowed as she stared at a place on the carpet. Then an eyebrow twitched, and her eyes grew wide. âOh ⦠Oh!â she said.
She looked back up at me. âOhhhh!â
âOh, look, youâve blown her tiny mind,â Iona said.
I glared at her over my shoulder. âNot. Helping.â
âBut â¦â Gen said, scratching her chin, staring at the floor again. âHow? How can vampires be a real thing?â
âHow are dogs a real thing?â Mill asked, leaning against the wall, arms folded. Iona shot him a fearsome scowl.
âBad example,â Mill said with a shrug.
âThat is a fair question,â I said, ignoring the other two. âOne I still struggle with. They do a great job at hiding in plain sight. I mean, look at those two. If you didnât know they were vampires, you wouldnât think twice, would you?â
Gen looked skeptically at them.
âIgnoring the ⦠bag of blood in her hands,â I said.
âI donât know â¦â Gen said.
âVampires are a real thing,â I said. âThey just are, and they have their own whole underground world. Iâve been there. Iâve seen it.â
Gen stared at me, wide-eyed. âLike, in tunnels beneath our feet?â
âNot literally underground,â I said. âI meant secret. Hidden from plain view.â
âTunnels are for filthy creatures,â Iona said, irony-free, sucking on a bag of blood. âLike moles. And dwarves.â
âDwarves ⦠are real?â Gen asked.
I shot Iona a look. âWhen do you become helpful again?â
âI took a knife for you,â she said, waving me off. âIf thatâs not useful to you and your tender, non-regenerating organs, I donât know what is.â
The gears were still grinding behind Genâs eyes. âSo ⦠are they like Dracula or something?â
âKinda-ish,â I said. âBut more like MTV Cribz with blood.â
âLifestyles of the Rich and Famous,â Lockwood said, whatever that meant. âBut paler.â
Genâs skepticism didnât soften. She frowned at me, then lowered her head into her hands. âWhat am I doing here?â
I realized, again, that with my track record I wasnât exactly the best person to be delivering this news to her.
âFine,â I said. âI get it. I could sit here and tell you every last thing about what has happened to me over the last four or five months.
